Physical Education
Intent
Scole CofE Primary Academy recognises and values the importance of Physical Education (PE). Our aim is to develop a fun, high-quality curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sports and other physically-demanding activities. We do this through fully adhering to the aims of the national curriculum for physical education to ensure that all children:
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time
- Engage in competitive sports and activities
- Lead healthy, active lives
Through fulfilling our curriculum, we are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team or independently, understanding fairness and equality of play to embed life-long values.
Spiritually
During the range of activities that children participate in, whether core PE lessons or extracurricular activities (including football at lunch time), they develop a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them. Children are consistently encouraged to use their imagination and creativity in their learning.
Implementation
The PE curriculum is mainly taught through the use of ‘Complete PE’, which is in line with the National Curriculum, and is used to aid teaching staff in their subject knowledge and planning of PE. Teachers are able to adjust and adapt lessons to suit the needs of their classes as well as weather conditions. The scheme provides a strong basis of what is expected in each year group as well as allowing staff to assess prior units of work to show progression through a particular taught skill.
Each class has access to two hours of high quality physical activity every week.
Key Stage 2 pupils receive weekly swimming lessons in a pre-designated half term with the aim that all children are able to swim a minimum of 25m unassisted.
