Music

Intent

At Scole CofE Primary Academy, we aim for children to foster a life-long love of music by exposing them to diverse musical experiences and developing a passion for the subject. Our curriculum is designed to inspire creativity and self expression as well as encouraging them to understand and appreciate the work and expression of others. It is hoped that children will learn to respect the music of different cultures and the impact it has on the lives of people around the world. Pupils explore a wide variety of musical genres and are allowed the opportunity to build on their existing musical skills through both singing and playing instruments. Children are taught to listen, perform, evaluate, analyse and, in Key Stage 2, compose in the hope that this will help them to achieve a deep understanding of the subject.

Spirituality:
In music, children form meaningful connections between themselves, their peers and their teacher through the joy of performance. A positive musical experience can allow children a sense of belonging, wonder and pride in themselves as individuals and as a collaborative group.

Implementation

Through well-planned lessons and musical activities, children will be taught the essential skills to help them become musicians:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others
  • have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations

Visiting peripatetic teachers from the Music Hub enhance the music curriculum for the children in KS2 by teaching them to play a musical instrument and learn about being in a band.
