We have been very fortunate to have enjoyed a morning working with Louise Jukes who played handball for Team GB at the London 2012 Olympics. Before her visit we thought about what we knew about handball…. which wasn’t too much!
Louise visited the school to tell us all about her experiences in handball including how she made the Olympic team, her training, her Olympic experience and to introduce handball to Scole Primary. During her assembly we were all very excited to hear about her having breakfast with Andy Murray, meeting the Queen and for some of us, trying on her London 2012 kit!
Class 3 and Class 4 both went onto take part in a coaching session with Louise learning the fundamental skills of handball and having a great time. Did you know that over 19 million people play handball worldwide and it is very popular in Europe?
We all learnt that many of the skills we use in other invasion games are also used in handball: throwing, catching, bouncing, dodging, attacking and defending. We began to put these skills to use in our small sided games.
We are now going to start playing handball in KS2 PE and look forward to putting all our new skills and knowledge into practise.
Our handball knowledge is now overflowing…………….look at our brainstorm after Louise’s visit! What an excellent way to use our Sports Premium Funding and we all had a brilliant time. We love handball at Scole!
